Graffiti : Graffiti is much maligned, a sign of depressed economies and neighbourhoods. But graffiti lends itself to great picture taking opportunities.

Honduras : Roatan is situated off the coast of Honduras. The Island is divided into English and Spanish sections. The former is very active, developed, and considered to be wealthy. The latter is very poor, run down, and depressed. These pictures were taken in 2003, around Christmas.

Whimsy : These shots are hard to classify. The guy in the pool roaring for the world to hear, the Madonna like close up, the lipstick moment, and more. So they are all here.

Aurora Farm House : The pictures in this album were taken more to record history than to sell. The farm house has been empty for the past 10 years. The owner let the property run down. It was sold recently to a developer who will likely turn this into a strip plaza, or big box store complex.

Too bad.

Your Bio

See. Shoot. Print. Hang. Wow.

I take pictures when I see something that asks to be recorded. A barn outside of Toronto that is sure to disappear making way for townhouses. A building in neglect in Louisiana, waiting patiently for the reconstruction to begin. The reflection of a high-rise in a puddle in a lane in downtown Toronto. A slow drive on Highway 1 in California reveals a building that could have been set up for a commercial shoot, except it wasn’t. Everything just waiting. I have no choice but to oblige.

The proliferation of digital cameras has created an unprecedented recording of history. At no time have we documented the passage of time in such a relentless way. And at no time have we had the ability to remove that moment by deleting a picture.

Whatever prompts you to take of a picture, just take it, and don’t delete it, even if you hate it. Leave it on your computer, come back and look at it in a year or so. A year changes your perspective. Print it, hang it, just look at it.

Biography

I am born in Iran, grew up in Ethiopia, spent a couple of years in a boarding school in England, and finally came to Canada in 1968. I started taking pictures soon after. Like most people, it was a hobby. Lots of practice and experimentation has honed my skills.

I have dabbled with digital photography, but prefer the world of film. The best of both worlds gives me the option of recording the moment on film, and transferring the negatives to the digital medium, allowing for predictable, repeatable results.

I am very proud to be a member of the Artist Collective at the Elaine Fleck Gallery, 888 Queen Street West in Toronto. I can be reached at FarokhMonajem@gmail.com.
